Hello,

I would really appreciate if someone could help me map the adm1 names to actual regions. When using the following data source: “Global climate and energy indicators from 1950 to present derived from reanalysis” regions are returned with the format: “ABW-5150 AFG-1741 AFG-1742” I understand that the first 3 letters corresponds to the country, however I would like to know how to map the numbers to the actual region. I have read through the documentation and see no clear mention of how these are created. Any help would be great!

Hi, I had the exact same question, and spent a huge amount of time looking for this information. I am not 100% sure, but I will share what I found. It seems the code is derived from WRI Aqueduct layer ( [Water Supply Control](https://hub.arcgis.com/datasets/nga::water-supply-control/explore?layer=39&location=-0.008388%2C0.000000%2C1.00)), which uses a non-standard/deprecated FAO GAUL code list (the current one seems to use the number part of the code for completely different areas). I downloaded the csv file from WRI, and cross checked with the code used in the Energy Indicators set, and it seems to match. I hope this will help others looking for the same information, but if my findings are incorrect, please do not hesitate to share the correct information.

Hello Freddy and everyone,

Thank you for your question. The ADM1 region identifiers used in the dataset, such as `AFG-1742`, are based on the Natural Earth Admin-1 geographical definitions. The corresponding region names can therefore be mapped using the `adm1_code` field in the Natural Earth Admin-1 dataset, with `name_en` providing the region name in English.

We agree that this mapping should be easier for users to access. We are therefore planning to provide a mapping between the ADM1 identifiers used in the dataset and the corresponding English region names directly through the CDS, for example, as a CSV file.

In the meantime, we will also add this explanation to the PUG.

I hope this helps.

Best regards,
Stefano
