To all E-Obs daily gridded data users,

A **new implementation of the [E-OBS dataset](https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/datasets/insitu-gridded-observations-europe?tab=overview)** is from today, Wednesday 4 November 2026, available in the Climate Data Store (CDS) and has replaced the previous dataset.

### What has changed?

The E-OBS data catalogue entry in the Climate Data Store (CDS) presents a **[revised CDS dataset and download interface](https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/datasets/insitu-gridded-observations-europe?tab=download)**.

As part of this change, the structure of data requests and the options available through the CDS download form and API may differ from those of the previous E-OBS dataset. Users accessing E-OBS programmatically should therefore review and, where necessary, update their existing API requests.

We recommend generating new request code using the **Show API request code** functionality on the new dataset’s Download page rather than assuming that requests created for the previous dataset will continue to work unchanged.

### New E-OBS\_EU product and licence

As part of C3S efforts to support open data and enable broader reuse of its datasets, the new E-OBS catalogue entry introduces **E-OBS\_EU** alongside the existing E-OBS product. The two products have different geographical coverage and are provided under different licence terms.

- **E-OBS** covers the whole of Europe and continues to be provided under the E-OBS product licence, which restricts use of the data to non-commercial research and education projects.
- **E-OBS\_EU** covers the EU area together with Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and the United Kingdom and is provided under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence. The introduction of this additional licence reflects **C3S’s commitment to promoting open data and facilitating wider access and reuse**. It permits the data to be used for any purpose, including commercial use, provided appropriate attribution is given.

Users should therefore select the product appropriate to their requirements and ensure that they comply with the licence terms applicable to that product. The licence conditions for E-OBS and E-OBS\_EU are distinct, and the terms associated with one product do not apply to the other.

### What do users need to do?

Users of E-OBS are advised to:

- review the [new E-OBS dataset and download interface](https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/datasets/insitu-gridded-observations-europe?tab=download);
- review and accept the new licence and its conditions of use, as applicable;
- check that their required data selections are available in the replacement dataset;
- generate new API request code from the new download interface; and
- **update and test existing automated workflows** that previously accessed the former E-OBS dataset.

Users should no longer rely on API requests developed for the previous E-OBS dataset without first checking their compatibility with the replacement dataset.
