As part of improving Data Stores users experience, a new version of the default _cdsapi_ package on Data Stores was released yesterday, 30 September 2025: version 0.7.7.

All _ **cdsapi** _ users are strongly recommended to upgrade their _cdsapi_ package to this latest version **0.7.7**.

In addition to this latest _cdsapi_ version release, we are delighted to announce that a **new separate API package —[_ecmwf-datastores-client_](https://pypi.org/project/ecmwf-datastores-client/)— is now also available, with advanced features**: metadata retrieval, synchronous or asynchronous job submission, REST API. Further details including links to API Documentation and [Jupyter Notebooks Tutorials](https://github.com/ecmwf-projects/dss-notebooks/tree/main/documentation/ecmwf-datastore-client) are available from the API pages on each of the Data Stores (e.g. New API package for advanced users section on [CDS](https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/how-to-api), [ADS](https://ads.atmosphere.copernicus.eu/how-to-api) and [EWDS](https://ewds.climate.copernicus.eu/how-to-api)).

Please be aware that [_ecmwf-datastores-client_](https://github.com/ecmwf/ecmwf-datastores-client), part of the ECMWF earthkit.data package, is **Incubating** and subject to ECMWF’s guidelines on [Software Maturity](https://github.com/ecmwf/codex/raw/refs/heads/main/Project%20Maturity). This means that the new API package is mostly feature-complete and the interface is mostly stable. If this software is to be used in operational systems you are strongly advised to use a released tag in your system configuration, and **you should be willing to accept incoming changes and bug fixes that require adaptations on your part**.

**_cdsapi_ users are not requested to migrate to using the new _ecmwf-datastores-client_ API package at this time** and may continue to use the existing _[cdsapi](https://pypi.org/project/cdsapi/#description)_ package until further notice.

Should you have any questions regarding this, please raise an enquiry ticket through our [Support Portal](https://jira.ecmwf.int/plugins/servlet/desk/portal/1/create/202). Thank you.

Are there any differences when using earthkit.data to access the CDS? Does / will earthkit.data.from\_source use this new package as the backend instead of cdsapi?
