CDS, ADS and EWDS down until further notice

We are very sorry to inform our users that due to some severe technical issues at the infrastructure level, the Data Stores (CDS, ADS and EWDS) and all associated services (e.g. dataset catalogues, API) are closed to users, and therefore not accessible, until further notice.

ECMWF teams are working around the clock to get the associated systems and services up and running as soon as possible.

We will post updates on the situation on a daily basis. You may also monitor the ECMWF Service Status page.

In the meantime, we sincerely thank all our users for their continued patience and understanding at this challenging time.

If anyone is in desperate need of ERA5 data, perhaps looking at NCAR’s backups [NCAR RDA Dataset d633000] would be a good interim solution. Hopefully soon CDS will be restored~

API is good for me at the moment,

Although no announcement as yet and status page still shows service degraded,

So not sure if it will stay available

Not good for me at this moment. Any suggestions team ?

Our Data Stores and all associated services have been restored and are accessible again.

Work is ongoing in the background to continue improving the overall performance of the system. Some users may still experience some difficulties with using the services (e.g. connection errors). Should such issues persist, don’t hesitate to contact us via our Support Portal and we will investigate. We also recommend that users regularly check our Forum for announcements and monitor the ECMWF Service Status page.

We would like to thank our users for their supporting comments on our Forum. Your understanding, feedback and enduring patience at such critical times is key to help us delivering state-of-the-art Data Stores for the benefit of all. Thank you.

There is still one issue with the web data access. If I substract a region area, the request automatically downloads the whole region (which is a way bigger request)

convert from .nc format to csv not working?

Python cannot process files with the .nc (NetCDF) format.

it’s not working 2 days
Everything was working until the day before yesterday.

Hi @Anabelle, many thanks for the hard-work putting the server back online :raised_hands:

I noticed that the derived era5 daily statistics dataset is a bit more unstable, often returning these errors:

Recovering from connection error [('Connection aborted.', RemoteDisconnected('Remote end closed connection without response'))]

While the hourly dataset is working perfectly. Is it a known issue or just bad luck on my side?

Thanks again

Hi @Anabelle thanks for keeping us updated.
Some info from the user side: The system was back and running super fast for a few hours for me, almost as “in the old days” (downloading of around 200kB files in a few minutes, in some cases even <1). But now I am back to super long queueing time so it takes 4-5 hours to get a file. No more failed downloads as of now, but still so slow it’s almost unusable… :frowning:

Looking forward for more updates - and remember you have a super large number of users rooting for you guys to bring this migration over the finish line successfully

Thank you for all the effort in getting this back online.

However, it seems there’s an issue with downloading NetCDF files using Python since the downtime. When specifying format=netcdf, the files are now being downloaded with a .zip extension instead of .nc.

Hi Chris,

Can you raise a ticket for this on the Support Portal (https://jira.ecmwf.int/plugins/servlet/desk/portal/1/create/202), stating the exact request that you’re making and the dataset you’re making it for? That will help us investigate.

Thanks,

Luke.
