As part of our continuous improvement to the CAMS service, some changes will be made to the “CAMS global biomass burning emissions based on fire radiative power (GFAS)” data available from the Atmosphere Data Store (ADS) and ECMWF Data Portal (aux.ecmwf.int; SFTP/FTP/HTTPS data access).
These changes are due to the forthcoming expected discontinuation of MODIS. We will replace the production system with an improved GFAS processing algorithm version 1.4.2 using both MODIS (as long as the data is available) and VIIRS observations.
For ADS users, the updates of GFAS version 1.2 data available from the catalogue entry will stop from 04 December 2025. An announcement will follow on when the new version of GFAS 1.4.2 will be available on the ADS.
For ECMWF Data Portal users, from 4 December:
- the GFAS daily 1.2 will be no longer available from the CAMS_GFAS folder.
- The CAMS_GFAS folder will now be used to give access to the new GFAS hourly 1.4.2 data.
- Users getting data from the CAMS_GFAS_HOURLY folder, are encouraged to migrate to the CAMS_GFAS folder to get access to the new 1.4.2 GFAS version.
For any enquiries please use the ECMWF Support portal.

Hello ! How to get access to ECMWF Data Portal in order to get access to GFAS 1.4.2? Thank you.
There is some information at this site from GFAS 1.4.1 on getting access to the ECMWF Data Portal that seems to apply for this updated version. You will have to create a ticket through the ECMWF Support Portal with a few added details. This information should be posted on the GFAS 1.4.2 site as well.
Best of luck!
Hello, I noticed that the GFAS emissions dataset has no data for the period from 2026-04-30 to 2026-05-16. Could you please clarify why this gap exists and if there is any plan to provide the missing data? Thank you!
Please watch the forum for updates on the ADS.
