Help Needed with CAMS Global Reanalysis Dataset and Model Levels

Hello everyone,

I’m currently studying air quality over the Himalayan region and need to download the CAMS global reanalysis dataset to run a CTM.

Given the complex topography of this region, I understand that selecting appropriate model levels is crucial. However, I’m struggling to fully understand how these levels work and how to determine the optimal number of levels for my study. Could someone provide guidance on this?

Initially, I tried downloading all 60 levels, but the request was too large and failed. I’ve now reduced it to 10 levels, but I’m unsure if that will be sufficient for my analysis.

Additionally, I’ve encountered an issue where my request gets stuck at the message: “INFO: status has been updated to running”, but nothing actually downloads.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Hi Ame,

You can read more about the Model Levels in the documentation (for the 60 levels): L60 model level definitions - User Documentation - ECMWF Confluence Wiki
There you will find the approximate geometric heights and pressure levels of each model level.

Data on model levels is the slowest to download because, unlike other data that is stored on disks, model levels data are stored on tapes where there is additional queuing system in place.

I hope this helps,
Milana

Yes it helped, thank you!
