Inquiry on Using the ECMWF API

I am currently studying meteorology and would like to work with the ECMWF API. My requirements are as follows:

  • Parameters: 2 m temperature (K), 1-hour precipitation (mm), 100 m u- and v-wind components (m/s), and 2 m dew point (K)

  • Prediction horizon: hourly forecasts up to 24 hours, covering the period from 5 days in the past to 8 days ahead

  • Location: global coverage at 0.25° resolution, for 16 to 256 locations at once

  • Frequency: requests submitted every 90 seconds

  • Data quality: predictive data should be comparable to ERA5T reanalysis data

Could you please let me know how I can obtain data that meets these requirements?

Thank you very much.

Hi Nikita,

The way you can get the access to ECMWF forecast data will depend where in the world you are.

In most of our Member and Cooperating states it is Meteorological services that are in charge for the data licence. Outside of these countries, you will need to contact ECMWF Data support.

You can read more here: Access to forecasts | ECMWF (under Researchers) and here: Use cases and licence conditions | ECMWF .

Since you plan to use the data at 0.25 resolution, you may consider using our open data as well. It is available with 3 hourly step up to day 6, and 6 hourly step from day 7 to day 15.

More info here: Open data | ECMWF

Data is available here: ECMWF Data Store (ECPDS) and using opendata-api here: ecmwf-opendata · PyPI

I hope this helps,
Milana

Hi Milana,

Thank you for your response. I need hourly step forecast climate data for up to 15 days. Could you please advise me on how I can access this data?

Thank you in advance.
