Missing ERA5 Cyclone Tracks

I have been using the cyclone track dataset and have noticed some potential issues. The total number of tracks is lower than a track dataset applied globally using the same algorithm. There are also many tracks missing for windstorm events that I would expect the algorithm to detect, particularly in Scandinavia but also over the UK. I suspect the tracks are being removed despite the centre of the cyclone being within the domain specified (i.e. south of 70N over Europe). Please could you clarify the methodology used to exclude tracks? For instance, are cyclones that are outside the domain at some point in their lifecycle discarded despite being in the domain for part of their lifetime? Thank you!

Hi,
could you please share the dataset that you are referring to?

Thanks
Michela

Hi,

Yes, its the cyclone track data from the Hodge’s tracking algorithm (Windstorm tracks and footprints derived from reanalysis over Europe between 1940 to present).

Thank you!
