We are pleased to announce that two new datasets including Ocean Essential Climate Variables (ECV) have been published today, 12 March 2026, in the Climate Data Store (CDS):
Combined sea surface and sea ice surface temperature data derived from satellite observations
and
Sea ice surface temperature derived from satellite observations
These two data products complement our existing C3S Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data by providing additional observations of Sea Ice Surface Temperature (IST). IST is important for tracking how sea ice interacts with the ocean and atmosphere through processes such as radiation, conduction, freezing and melting, and is therefore a key indicator of climate change in polar regions.
The two data sets have distinct focuses. ‘Sea ice surface temperature derived from satellite observations’ is a Level-3 IST-only product focusing on the polar regions, while ‘Combined sea surface and sea ice surface temperature data derived from satellite observations’ is a Level-4 product uniquely combining IST data with global SST data.
