We are pleased to announce that the new version v202505 of the Soil moisture gridded data from 1978 to present dataset has been published on the Climate Data Store (CDS).
The new version includes:
- An update to the soil moisture processing chain to accommodate the new ASCAT products (more information on them is available here), reenabling the regular provision of the ACTIVE and COMBINED products.
- Root-zone soil moisture data from 01/1980 to present, available as daily, 10-daily and monthly averages.
- A Freeze/Thaw classification product, available from 11/1978 to present as a daily product.
Both Root-zone soil moisture and Freeze/Thaw are designated as products within the Soil Moisture Essential Climate Variable (ECV) as defined by GCOS. Their addition expands the CDS offering, bringing three out of four Soil Moisture ECV products to users.
With the release of v202505, users should be aware that the older versions (v201312 and v202212) will no longer be updated after 31/01/2026. This is expected to be adequate time given that the COMBINED and ACTIVE products for these versions are no longer regularly updated. Should a longer transition period be required users are requested to get in contact via the ECMWF support portal.
