Open data - 9 km free subset

Dear ECMWF Support,

We are integrating the ECMWF real-time open data (IFS oper and wave, 0.25°) into our forecast pipeline, and we are trying to size for the move to native resolution.

Your UEF2025 slides (The Future of ECMWF Data Policy, 18 September 2025) mention a free and open subset at 9 km with a 2-hour latency, new in 2026. We could not find this in the open data user documentation. Three questions:

  1. Is there a target date? We currently see only 0p25 on the mirrors.
  2. Will the 0.25° subset continue in parallel, and will the 9 km one be mirrored to AWS and Azure? The mirrors are our access path.

Best.

Bertrand.

It’s unlikely they will launch any sooner since the 9km data is still highly commercialized. It would be far better for ECMWF to release the 9km data after the 4.5km model is operationally launched.

Dear Bertrand,

We plan to publish open data at 9km resolution with the 2-hour latency in couple of weeks, however the concrete date has not been confirmed yet.

0.25° and 0.1° resolution data will be available in parallel, and the plan is to have it mirrored in AWS and Azure (but this still needs to be confirmed too).

I hope this helps.

Milana

Dear Milana,

Thank you for your reply. We will wait for an update over the coming weeks.

Bertrand.
