Hi ECMWF community,
I have been comparing ERA5 and GHRSST with outputs from a coupled model, focusing on the diurnal cycle over the ocean.
I found that the diurnal cycle of sea surface skin temperature (SKT) in ERA5 agrees very well with GHRSST. In contrast, the bulk SST simulated by the coupled model does not reproduce the diurnal signal as well. For reference, I have attached a figure illustrating this comparison.
This made me wonder about the operational IFS configuration:
are the cool ocean / warm layer parameterizations currently activated in the operational IFS when computing surface fluxes?
Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Biao Zhao
