Sign convention Time-integrated surface latent heat net flux

Hello,
I am reading the documentation of the following variable (Time-integrated surface latent heat net flux and Time-integrated surface sensible heat net flux) but I am a bit confused with the sign convention that era5 uses for these variables: “The ECMWF convention for vertical fluxes is positive downwards.” Does this mean that downward fluxes (if they are positive) evaporation is happening or is it condensation happening?
Since I am working with composites on dates of certain extremes (hot) I am getting positive values in the areas where hot temperatures were happening, I would expect to get then negative values, but I am a bit confused with the convection. Your help is appreciated!

Thanks so much in advance and sorry for the maybe obvious question,

Kind regards.
