"Why can the precipitation minus evaporation (P - E) balance be greater than total runoff (surface and subsurface) in certain regions, and where does the excess water go?"

In my analysis, I compared the values of precipitation (P), evaporation (E), and runoff (surface and subsurface) for the Lake Eyre watershed. I calculated the precipitation minus evaporation (P - E) balance and compared it to total runoff to understand where the excess water went. I observed that in some cases, the P - E balance was greater than total runoff, raising the question of what happens to the excess water. This excess water could be stored in the soil, infiltrate the groundwater, or be used by vegetation, depending on local soil and vegetation conditions.
