Discover what is behind of the forthcoming new AgERA5 version 2

Dear AgERA5 users,

At the start of 2024, an inventory was made of issues and gaps in the current AgERA5 dataset available on the Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS) following users feedback.

We are pleased to inform you that we are currently starting the processing for the AgERA5 version 2 (v2) product which will address a number of issues and product requests. These include new data layers:
The Penman-Monteith reference evapotranspiration based on the FAO-56 algorithm

  • The daily min/max humidity
  • The daily rainfall intensity
  • The vapour pressure deficit at daily maximum temperature

Moreover, we will solve some technical issues such as:

  • Erroneous temperature values due to integer overflows during processing
  • An improved land/sea mask which handles the existence of small islands or irregular coastlines in a better way
  • Improved metadata in the NetCDF files

We foresee that the first AgERA5v2 products will be available on the CDS in the first quarter of 2025.

However, we appreciate that there are a number of requests for more data layers than have not been added in V2. These requests will be compiled in the Service Evolution document which be used as input for a possible AgERA6 based on the upcoming ERA6 reanalysis from ECMWF.

If you have any further questions, please raise a query from the Support Portal.

Best regards
ECMWF Support on behalf of the AgERA5 team
